From knife skills to a big grub-in, the Culinary Club is back in action this week. With last week's task of making a Ratatouille dish, this week the Culinary Club is taking us to the end of the rainbow to meet the Irish.

This week in the Culinary Club it was Saint Patrick's Day and they took on a very famous Irish dish, Irish soda bread. Soda bread (Irish: arán sóide) is a variety of quick bread traditionally made in a variety of cuisines. The ingredients of traditional soda bread are flour, bread soda, salt, and buttermilk.

In a large bowl, the club members mixed together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and margarine. Then we stirred in 1 cup of buttermilk and egg. They turned the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and kneaded slightly. We then formed the dough into a round and placed it on a prepared baking sheet.

According to Chef Clopp, it is a learning experience for the young students to take simple ingredients and know how to put in the correct measurements in order for the dish to come out exactly as planned.

“It didn't take that long to make,” Junior, Kristin Luna said, “It was about a good hour and it was done.”

The finished product of the soda bread stunned the Culinary Club members, its smooth texture with a honey glaze dripping through your fingers accompanied by a cup of ice cream. The soda bread was a great experience for the Culinary Club to participate in as they seek more adventures this school year.

Next week the Culinary Club is going for a trip to Japan as they help make a dish for a group of Japanese visitors March 24, 2016.
