With the spring season coming around, the bats and gloves are coming back out as the softball team held their three day tryouts in the beginning of February, and the competition couldn’t get any more intense.

The total number of girls trying out this year was just over 50 with only 37 spots available for both junior varsity and varsity teams, according to varsity head coach Greg Ochs.

Ochs asked the girls to run bases, catch pop flies and ground balls, and work on their catching at first base. All of these drills were judged by four returning players.

“ [Coach Ochs] didn’t have anyone trying out for a position. He was just seeing what skills each girl had to see if they were advanced enough to be on the varsity team,” returning senior Nia Robinson said.

For girls with less experience, it is more difficult to make the cut while considering more than half the spots on the team are taken by girls returning from previous seasons.

When asked how challenging it is to achieve a place on the team, Ochs said, “For the varsity team definitely, just because of the girls who had a couple years of experience.”

As the tryouts came to a close, Ochs assigned 19 players to the Varsity team and 18 players to the junior varsity team, each with hopes to make a great impact on this year’s season.
