Students gather in the Health Center, H621, on Dec. 7th and 8th for a heated battle of the popular nintendo melee, Super Smash Bros Brawl for WiiU.

Hercules High School held its first gaming competition this month in the health center. The event was hosted by the Hercules Fighting Game Club. Club president Lawrence Pinto was inspired to bring competitive gaming to Hercules after visiting an event in Pinole which featured a League of Legends gaming match.

Competitors paid a $3 participation fee, and the Brawl champions were awarded with a $20 gift card to target. The club hopes to save the extra funds for purchasing new games and equipment. Lawrence hopes to get schools outside of the Hercules community involved in future tournaments.

“We hope to reach out to other schools and get other people to join,” said Fighting Game President Lawrence Pinto.

The competition went on for two days and consisted of both a singles and doubles match. Monday was preliminary day and Tuesday was reserved for semifinals and finals. After two days on the battlefield, Hercules announced its first Super Smash Bros Brawl champions. The victor for singles was Alexander Cardona and the winners of the double battle were Alexander Cardona and Alec Wong.

Yet the competition does not end here. Lawrence projects that the next tournament will be the new Street Fighter V. It’s time to get practicing!
