Do you need to earn money to help pay for your college tuition, but don’t know where to go? Well at the career center, Hercules High’s College Admissions Counselor, Jasmyn Monet Oliver, is available to help students in their search for scholarships. Whether you need advice for college, for filling out scholarship applications or for finding scholarships that you may qualify for, Ms. Oliver is there to help. She is available from 9:30AM - 5PM on Mondays and Tuesdays, Wednesdays if an appointment is made 24-hours prior by email (jasmyn.oliver@berkeley.edu) or in person, from 9:30AM - 3PM on Thursdays, and from 9:30AM - 5:30PM on Fridays.
With the large number of students who are in need of scholarships and only one college counselor, Ms. Oliver often holds “Scholarship Fairs” where piles of papers with scholarship information--the reward(s), requirements, and procedures--are set up throughout the career center, available for students to pick up when they walk through the door. The last “Scholarship Fair” was held from December 18-19, 2014 and was only for seniors, but the next “Scholarship Fair” will be held on February 13, 2015 and will be available for all high-school students.
According to Ms. Oliver: “The upcoming ‘Scholarship Fair’ will be bigger and better than the previous one because more scholarships will be available and it will be open to all high-schoolers rather than just the seniors. In addition, seniors who show me their ‘expected family contribution’ (EFC) after completing their FAFSA, will receive a small gift on February 13.”
A wide variety of scholarships are available for students, including the “Prindle Institute High School”, “Cappex”, “WyzAnt”, “Gates Millenium” and many more. The types of scholarships that best fit the student depend on his or her desired majors, eligibility, and/or whether he or she wants to write an essay. The number of scholarships available to be picked up at the career center are endless--all you need to do is ask.
